Wages Of Fear (aka Sorcerer) 2023 Trailer

Notes on this edit- This was a trailer I created for 1977's "Sorcerer". Many people refer to this film as 'the film that opened with Star Wars'. On top of that was its misleading title- "Sorcerer". While it couldn't be farther from the sci-fi genre, it's a heavy duty film made by a strong pedigree incorporating tight drama and thriller genres, while maintaining character. The film starts out similar to William Friedkin's own "Exorcist": foreign lands (plural in this case) with subtitled dialogue for the first 10 minutes. One was a star audiences were familiar with (Roy Schieder), but the other 3 leads were mainly unknowns in the USA (Bruno Cremer, Francisco Rabal, Amidou). And similar to the aforementioned title, Friedkin took a gamble, asking the audience to trust him as we follow all four of these character's prologues (one after another), and all shot in different parts of the world. And while first viewings immediately bring a who-what-where-why, the payoff is just as rich as Exorcist's Iraq opener was upon repeated viewings. The hardest sale of this film is the premise: four desperate strangers with a common goal of getting two trucks from here to there, each loaded with sensitive TNT that the slightest bump will blow it's transport and inhabitants to kingdom come. It's the cinematic equivalent of watching someone walk across a stage with a spoonful of water but cannot allow a droplet to fall. And Friedkin makes this thrilling as all hell. The film never at any point flat out states its purpose, or presents an easy line to include in the trailer (we need to go from A to B) What is said is under muffled dialogue, loud backgrounds attributed to actual locations and people. The first time I viewed I couldn't even understand why they needed to transport dynamite to an oil field that had been shown exploding ten minutes earlier- and upon research it was to explode the explosion. So I wanted to set up the story as best I could, with the best dialogue I could garner. If I could avoid a written narrative, all the better. The tagline that does run with the trailer ("The only wages worth..." et.) are culled from the original advertising materials. Is it modernized? To an extent that the cuts are quicker than they would be otherwise from the period. But I didn't want to keep it completely out of its era so I kept the studio logo in place and added a tag about "special engagement" playing soon at this theater. However the biggest update I added was a change in the title- gone was "Sorcerer", hello "Wages of Fear". It's a title that I feel is apt for the thrill ride Friedkin gives us, and more importantly, it's a title you can read on character's faces. About

A single cut frame can make or break a moment; it can take you completely out of the scene rendering everything that came before it useless.

Fine film flow dictates each cut sets the tone for the scene, and adapted to that genre (musical, drama, comedy, horror, or even educational). Being very familiar with flow & tone, I evaluate the raw materials and put together a visual symphony.
